Press any key — it lights up and turns green once tested. Works with external keyboards too.

How to test your keyboard

  1. Click anywhere on this page so it has focus.
  2. Press every key one by one. Working keys turn green.
  3. Any key that doesn't light up may be faulty, dirty, or blocked by software.

Key not working?

The page shows the e.key, e.code and keyCode for each press, which developers can use for debugging.

Step-by-step: diagnosing a key

  1. Press every key once, row by row; each lights up green on the virtual keyboard when the browser receives it.
  2. A key that does not light up is either not sending a signal (hardware) or being swallowed by the operating system (Fn locks, sticky keys, a shortcut app).
  3. Hold a key: it should register once and then repeat — if it registers many times on a single press, the switch is 'chattering' (dirt or wear).
  4. Press combinations: Shift + letter, Ctrl + letter, Fn + F-keys — multimedia F-keys may need the Fn lock toggled.

Tips and common mistakes

Frequently asked questions

Why do some keys not light up?

Keys like Fn, Print Screen and media keys are handled by the system and never reach the browser. Everything else should register.

Can I test a mobile keyboard?

Partly — tap the page and type; on-screen keyboards send limited key events.

Does it work with a wireless keyboard?

Yes — any keyboard connected to the device.
