Dead pixel vs stuck pixel

How to test

  1. Clean the screen first — dust looks like dead pixels.
  2. Tap Start; the page goes full screen in white.
  3. Cycle through black, red, green, blue, yellow, cyan, magenta and grey, scanning the whole screen each time.

Can stuck pixels be fixed?

Sometimes. Gently massaging the spot through a soft cloth, or running a rapidly flashing colour pattern for 10–20 minutes, revives some stuck pixels. Dead pixels cannot be repaired. Many manufacturers replace a panel only above a certain number of defects — check your warranty terms and test a new phone, laptop or monitor within the return period.

Step-by-step: testing a new or second-hand screen

  1. Clean the screen first — dust looks exactly like a dead pixel.
  2. Tap Start full-screen test; the screen fills with red. Look closely from 30 cm, then move on with a tap or arrow key: green, blue, white, black, grey.
  3. A pixel that stays black on every colour is dead; one that stays one colour (often red, green or blue) is stuck; a bright dot on black is a hot pixel.
  4. Also look for light bleed at the edges on the black screen, and uneven patches or yellow tint on white and grey.
  5. Photograph any defect with another phone for the warranty claim.

Tips and common mistakes

Frequently asked questions

How do I check for dead pixels on a new phone?

Run this test and cycle through all colours, looking closely at each. Do it within the return window.

Is one dead pixel covered under warranty?

Policies vary — many brands require 3–5 defective pixels before replacing a screen, though premium brands may replace for one. Check your warranty.

Why does the full-screen button not work on iPhone?

iOS Safari doesn't allow full-screen pages; the test still fills the browser area — rotate the phone and hide the toolbar for a bigger view.

How to spot dead pixels on a laptop screen?

Run the full-screen test and look closely at each solid colour. A pixel that stays black on every colour is dead; one stuck on a single colour (red, green or blue) is a stuck pixel, which sometimes recovers.
