Find the final price after a discount — or two stacked discounts — and how much you save.
Discount formula
Sale price = Price × (1 − discount ÷ 100) You save = Price − Sale priceExample
₹2,499 at 40% off = 2,499 × 0.6 = ₹1,499.40; you save ₹999.60.
"40% + extra 10%" is not 50%
Stacked discounts apply one after another: ₹2,499 → 40% off → ₹1,499.40 → extra 10% off → ₹1,349.46. That is a 46% total discount, not 50%. Enter both percentages above to see the real figure.
Discount percentage from prices
Discount % = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100MRP ₹1,200, selling at ₹900 → 25% off. Need GST on top? Add the rate in the last box — shops charge GST on the discounted price.

How to use the discount calculator
- Enter the price on the tag (MRP or list price).
- Enter the discount percentage — for 'buy 1 get 1' type 50; for 'flat ₹500 off' switch to the amount mode.
- Add GST if the shop charges it on top of the discounted price (common for electronics and restaurant bills).
- Read the final price, the money saved, and the effective discount.
Step-by-step: ₹2,499 shirt at 30% off
- Discount amount: 2,499 × 30 ÷ 100 = ₹749.70.
- Sale price: 2,499 − 749.70 = ₹1,749.30.
- Shortcut: multiply by (100 − 30) ÷ 100 = 0.7 → 2,499 × 0.7 = ₹1,749.30.
Two discounts in a row
'40% off + extra 10% off' is not 50% off. ₹1,999 × 0.6 = ₹1,199.40, then × 0.9 = ₹1,079.46 — an effective discount of 46%, not 50%.
Discount then GST
A ₹1,999 gadget at 30% off becomes ₹1,399.30; with 18% GST on top: 1,399.30 × 1.18 = ₹1,651.17. Always check whether the sale price shown is before or after GST.
Worked examples
| Situation | Working | Answer |
|---|
| Festival sale: ₹45,000 phone at 22% off | 45,000 × 0.78 | ₹35,100, saving ₹9,900 |
| Working backwards: paid ₹1,350 after 25% off | 1,350 ÷ 0.75 | original price ₹1,800 |
| Find the percentage: MRP ₹899, selling ₹629 | (899 − 629) ÷ 899 | 30% off |
Tips and common mistakes
- Bank-card 'instant discounts' are often capped (e.g. 10% up to ₹1,500) — a ₹40,000 purchase gets ₹1,500, not ₹4,000.
- Compare the price per unit (per kg, per 100 ml) rather than the discount percentage when pack sizes differ.
- For GST-inclusive bills use the GST Calculator to see the base price and tax separately.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 20% off a price?
Multiply the price by 0.8. ₹1,500 at 20% off is ₹1,200; you save ₹300.
How do I find the discount percentage?
Subtract the sale price from the original, divide by the original and multiply by 100. (1,200 − 900) ÷ 1,200 × 100 = 25%.
Is 50% + 50% off free?
No. The second 50% applies to the already halved price, so you pay 25% of the original — a 75% total discount.
