How to use this tool
Enter the weight from the tag, pick the purity (most jewellery is 22K/916), type today's rate per 10 grams and the making charges your jeweller quotes.
Good to know
GST on gold jewellery is 3% of the value including making charges. Making charges vary widely — usually 8% to 25%, or a fixed amount per gram.
Step by step
- Type the jewellery weight in grams (as printed on the tag or bill).
- Choose the purity — 22K (916) for most jewellery, 24K for coins and bars.
- Enter today's gold rate per 10 g and say whether it is the 24K or 22K rate.
- Add the making charges (as % or ₹ per gram) and any wastage/VA your jeweller charges.
- Tap Calculate price to see the gold value, charges, 3% GST and final price.
Gold price formula
Price = (rate per gram × purity factor × weight) + wastage + making charges + hallmark charge + 3% GST
If you have the 24K rate, the 22K rate per gram is the 24K rate × 0.916 (916 means 91.6% pure gold). 18K is × 0.75 and 14K is × 0.585.
Worked example: 10 g 22K chain
Suppose the 24K rate is ₹1,00,000 per 10 g (₹10,000 per gram) and the making charge is 12%.
| Step | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| 22K rate per gram | 10,000 × 0.916 | ₹9,160 |
| Gold value | 9,160 × 10 g | ₹91,600 |
| Making charges | 12% of 91,600 | ₹10,992 |
| Value before GST | 91,600 + 10,992 | ₹1,02,592 |
| GST | 3% of 1,02,592 | ₹3,077.76 |
| Total | ₹1,05,669.76 |
Change only the making charge to 20% and the same chain costs about ₹1,13,217 — making charges are where prices really differ between shops.

Smart buying tips
- Check the BIS hallmark: the BIS logo, the purity grade (like 22K916) and a 6-digit HUID code. You can verify the HUID in the BIS CARE app.
- Ask for making charges in writing and whether they are a % or per gram — on heavy pieces a per-gram charge is often cheaper.
- Wastage or “value addition” (VA) is common in South India; it is an extra % of gold value. Ask whether it is included in the quoted making charge.
- Stones are priced separately; the gold weight on the bill should be the net weight of gold only.
- Planning to sell or pledge gold? Shops pay on purity and net weight, without making charges — so the resale value is close to the gold value line above.
