TNEA engineering cut-off formula

Cut-off (out of 200) = Maths + Physics ÷ 2 + Chemistry ÷ 2

Each subject is first taken out of 100. Maths carries full weight (100), Physics and Chemistry half weight each (50 + 50).

Example

Maths 94, Physics 92, Chemistry 90 → 94 + 46 + 45 = 185 / 200.

Marks out of a different total

If your board gives marks out of 150 or 200, first scale each subject to 100: 120 out of 150 → 80. Enter the maximum marks above and the tool scales automatically.

For students from other boards (CBSE, ICSE, etc.), TNEA normalises marks before applying the formula. Check the official TNEA brochure for the year you're applying.

Using your cut-off

Compare your cut-off with previous years' closing marks for the college and branch you want, in your community category. Ties are broken by Maths marks, then Physics, then the random number.

Frequently asked questions

How is the TNEA cut-off calculated?

Maths out of 100 plus half of Physics and half of Chemistry (each out of 100), giving a total out of 200.

What is a good engineering cut-off for TNEA?

Top colleges such as CEG, MIT and PSG Tech typically close above 195–199 for popular branches in the general category; many good colleges close between 170 and 190. It varies by year, branch and community.

Is the cut-off different for CBSE students?

The formula is the same, but marks may be normalised first. Check the official TNEA prospectus.
