Definitions
- Mean — the average: sum ÷ count.
- Median — the middle value after sorting (average of the two middle values if the count is even).
- Mode — the value that appears most often.
- Range — largest − smallest.
- Standard deviation — how spread out the values are. Use population for a whole group, sample for a sample of a bigger group.
Worked example
72, 85, 90, 66, 85, 78 → sorted 66, 72, 78, 85, 85, 90. Mean = 476 ÷ 6 = 79.33; median = (78 + 85) ÷ 2 = 81.5; mode = 85; range = 24.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mean and median?
Mean is the arithmetic average; median is the middle value. With outliers (like one very high salary) the median represents the typical value better.
Can there be more than one mode?
Yes. If two or more values tie for most frequent, the data is bimodal or multimodal.
Sample or population standard deviation?
Use sample (n − 1) when your numbers are a sample from a larger group, which is the usual case in statistics classes.
