Vimshottari Dasha Calculator

Mahadasha and Antardasha dates from your birth details — including which dasha is running now.

Vimshottari dasha

Your planetary periods.

Enter your date, time and place's time zone of birth.

How to use this tool

The dasha sequence starts from the lord of your birth nakshatra. How much of the first dasha is left at birth depends on how far the Moon had moved through that nakshatra.

Good to know

Dates use years of 365.25 days. Some astrologers use other year lengths, so dates can differ by a few days or weeks.

Step by step

  1. Enter your date and time of birth.
  2. Choose the birth place's time zone (IST for India).
  3. Tap Show my dasha periods.
  4. Read the dasha balance at birth, the Mahadasha table and the Antardashas of the current Mahadasha (highlighted).

What is Vimshottari dasha?

Vimshottari (“120”) dasha is the most widely used planetary-period system in Indian astrology. A full cycle lasts 120 years and is divided among nine grahas in a fixed order. Each Mahadasha is divided into nine Antardashas (bhuktis) in the same order, starting with the Mahadasha lord itself.

1Ketu (केतु)7 yearsAshwini, Magha, Mula
2Venus / Shukra (शुक्र)20 yearsBharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha
3Sun / Surya (सूर्य)6 yearsKrittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha
4Moon / Chandra (चंद्र)10 yearsRohini, Hasta, Shravana
5Mars / Mangal (मंगल)7 yearsMrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishta
6Rahu (राहु)18 yearsArdra, Swati, Shatabhisha
7Jupiter / Guru (गुरु)16 yearsPunarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada

How the dasha balance is calculated

Your first Mahadasha is ruled by the lord of your birth nakshatra. If the Moon had already covered 40% of that nakshatra at birth, then 60% of that planet's Mahadasha is left — that is the dasha balance at birth. For example, born with the Moon 40% through Rohini (ruled by the Moon, 10 years): balance = 60% × 10 = 6 years of Moon Mahadasha, followed by Mars (7), Rahu (18), Jupiter (16) and so on.

Antardasha length

Antardasha = Mahadasha years × Antardasha planet's years ÷ 120. In a 20-year Venus Mahadasha, the Sun Antardasha lasts 20 × 6 ÷ 120 = 1 year.

How the calculation works

Your nakshatra and rashi come from where the Moon was in the sky when you were born. The calculator converts your birth date, time and time zone to Universal Time, works out the Moon's position with the standard lunar theory used by astronomers (Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms), and subtracts the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa — the official ayanamsa of the Indian national calendar — to get the sidereal (Vedic) longitude.

Why birth time matters: the Moon moves about 13° a day — roughly half a degree an hour. If your Moon is close to a boundary, a difference of an hour or two can change the pada, and occasionally the nakshatra or rashi. Use the time on your birth certificate if you have it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which Mahadasha I am running?

Enter your birth details. The table highlights the Mahadasha and Antardasha that include today's date.

Which ayanamsa does this use?

Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the standard used by the Indian Ephemeris and most Indian panchangs. KP or Raman ayanamsa can give slightly different degrees.

I don't know my exact birth time. What should I do?

Enter your best estimate. The rashi rarely changes within a few hours, but the pada and dasha dates are sensitive to time. If the Moon is near a boundary the result will say so through its degree — check with an astrologer if needed.

Is my data saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

Why do dates differ from my astrologer's chart?

Small differences in ayanamsa, birth time or year length (365.25 vs 360 days) shift dasha dates. The order of dashas stays the same.
