Is it a leap year? The rule
A year is a leap year if it is divisible by 4 — except century years (ending in 00), which are leap years only if divisible by 400. So 2024 and 2028 are leap years, 2026 and 2027 are not; 2000 was, 1900 was not, and 2100 will not be. A leap year has 366 days, with 29 February as the extra day.

Why we need leap years
The Earth takes about 365.2422 days to orbit the Sun. Adding one day every four years over-corrects slightly, which is why three century years out of four are skipped. Without leap years the seasons would drift by about 24 days every century.
