What the 8th Pay Commission could mean for your salary

The 8th Central Pay Commission was constituted in January 2025 with its terms of reference approved later that year; its recommendations are expected to apply from 1 January 2026, with actual payment and arrears following the report. The key number is the fitment factor — the multiplier applied to your existing basic pay to arrive at the new basic. The 7th CPC used 2.57; figures discussed for the 8th CPC range from 1.92 to 2.86.

New basic = Current basic × fitment factor (rounded to ₹100)

Because DA is merged into the new basic, DA restarts from 0% and HRA/TA are recalculated on the new basic. That is why a 2.28 fitment is not a 128% raise in take-home: compare the "expected" and "current" figures above.

This is a projection. No fitment factor, pay matrix or allowance rates are final until the Commission's report is accepted by the government. Use it to compare scenarios, not for official calculations.

Example

Basic ₹35,400 (Level 6, cell 1) × 2.28 = ₹80,700 new basic. With 20% HRA that is ₹96,840, against today's ₹35,400 + 60% DA + 20% HRA = ₹63,720 — a rise of about 52%.

Projection only. The 8th Central Pay Commission was announced in January 2025 and its terms of reference approved later in 2025; it has not yet submitted recommendations. The fitment factors offered (1.92, 2.28, 2.57, 2.86) are estimates based on past commissions, not an official rule — figures will change when the report is accepted by the Cabinet.

Frequently asked questions

When will the 8th Pay Commission be implemented?

It is expected to take effect from 1 January 2026, but implementation happens only after the Commission submits its report and the Cabinet approves it; arrears are usually paid from the effective date.

What is the expected minimum salary under the 8th CPC?

With the current minimum basic of ₹18,000: 1.92 → ₹34,560; 2.28 → ₹41,000; 2.57 → ₹46,260; 2.86 → ₹51,480. Pensioners' basic pension would rise by the same factor.

Does DA continue after the 8th CPC?

DA is reset to 0% when the new pay scale starts (it is merged into basic) and then accrues again twice a year.

What is the 8th pay commission fitment factor?

The fitment factor is the multiplier applied to current basic pay to get the new basic. The 7th CPC used 2.57. For the 8th CPC the figures being discussed range from 1.92 to 2.86; the final number comes only with the Commission's report, so this calculator lets you try any value.
