How Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana works
- Open for a girl child up to age 10; one account per girl, two per family (three for twins).
- Deposit ₹250 to ₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years.
- Interest (currently 8.2%, revised quarterly) compounds yearly for 21 years from opening — so it keeps earning for 6 years after deposits stop.
- Up to 50% can be withdrawn after the girl turns 18 for education; the account can be closed on marriage after 18.
- EEE tax status: deposits qualify under 80C, and both interest and maturity are tax-free.
Example
₹1,50,000 a year from 2026 at 8.2%: deposits total ₹22.5 lakh and the maturity in 2047 is about ₹71.8 lakh, of which ₹49.3 lakh is tax-free interest.

SSY vs PPF
Both are government-backed and EEE. SSY pays a higher rate (8.2% vs 7.1%) but is only for a girl child and locks money until she is 18–21. PPF is for anyone with a 15-year term and loans/partial withdrawals after a few years.
